Tournaments are controlled competitive environments that allow you as a practitioner to display and improve your skills in a safe arena. Although some may think tournaments are all about “who is better,” that is only a small part of their purpose.
In general there are two types of tournaments: winning at any cost, or competing with a good attitude (possibly winning an award) and learning under ideal conditions.
Remember that tournaments are not just for an award. They allow you to meet new people, make new friends, put your nerves to the test and display your acquired skills. By focusing on these purposes, it is possible to be happy whether you win or lose.
In reality, your competition is not just in the ring. You are competing with yourself on a daily basis. You compete with your body to stay in shape or lose weight. You compete with your mind to retain knowledge. Even in the case of a match against an opponent, you are not just competing against that person’s skill, but against yourself to be the best you can be. Tournaments are a great opportunity for increasing your skills and boosting your confidence.
Compete on a National Level
Each season the American Taekwondo Association hosts three major events; Fall Nationals, Spring Nationals and the ATA World Championships. These events have grown to where they are not only great events for competition, but the opportunity to experience Songahm Taekwondo at its most dynamic. From Master Promotion Ceremonies, to exhibitions by ATA Demo Teams, to energetic seminars for our instructors and school owners... they have become an essential part of the ATA!
